About Our Mission Opportunities for Change-makers Operation Smile Student Programs offers unique opportunities for young people to get involved in our fight against cleft lip and palate conditions worldwide. Our mission is to provide safe and timely surgery, as well as comprehensive care to every child born with a cleft. We have already helped thousands of children and their families, but there is still much work to be done. We believe that young people can make a difference, and we welcome students to join us in our mission by volunteering, fundraising, or raising awareness. A cleft condition is a gap in the lip or roof of the mouth that didn’t close during the early stages of pregnancy. This happens more often than you may realize: It is estimated that, worldwide, a child is born every three minutes with a cleft condition. A cleft may make it difficult to eat, drink and speak. Fortunately, with the right treatment and support, children with cleft conditions can lead happy, healthy lives. But, perhaps most importantly, they’ll build meaningful connections with Operation Smile’s patients and learn how to apply their knowledge to make a difference in the lives of others.
